In Nepal, 20th September is celebrated as Nepal’s Constitution Day as a remembrance of the country’s National Constitution, which came into effect on 20th September 2015. The constitution meant that the country officially became the Federal Democratic Republic.

Why Nepal never had an Independence day?

In most parts of the World, the national day is celebrated on Independence Day. However, Nepal never remained a part of any other country or under the control of any colonial power. Hence, Nepal never exactly had an Independence Day. The first National Constitution Day was celebrated on 20th September 2016 as the first anniversary of the country’s new constitution.

Nepals’ Celebrations

The day is celebrated as a National Holiday in the country. The celebrations are carried out as in the rest of the World. Celebrations feature National Prade, Seminars, and other nationalism-oriented activities. In 2019, at the Army Prade ground, the Nepali Prime Minister called this day a day of great joy and celebration since the constitution brought the struggle of Nepalis to its fruitful end after 7 challenging decades.

History and Interim Constitution

Nepal remained a Monarchy for almost two and half centuries. With rising levels of awareness, efforts had been started to overthrow the Monarchy in the kingdom during the 20th century. The earliest efforts were made in 1948, after which constitutional changes were made in 1951 to achieve the goal. However, it made little difference, and the major breakthrough came in 2007 when an interim constitution was placed in the country. An assembly was held responsible for drafting the country’s new constitution to make it the Federal Democratic Republic by 2010.

However, because of complexities and disagreements, the process was delayed, and eventually, in 2015, the new constitution was implemented.

What Nepal is to the World?

The whole World knows Nepal because of Mount Everest, which is the highest mountain in the World, rising to a height of 8849m in the Himalayan region of Nepal.

The country has a diverse population with multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-religious people living there. Despite the diversity, it is pleasing to know that the country is the Democratic Republic now.
